While the roar of the crowds reverberates across stadiums in Europe, a different reality simmers just beneath the surface. 

This weekend sees the start of Africa and Asia flagship tournaments the Afcon and Asia Cup, respectively. 

Unlike the European Championships - the Euros - scheduled for Germany  in June and July this year, the Afcon and Asian tournaments take place under the dark shadow of European club football that will continue right through these competitions.

Africans and Asians will have to scroll through dozens of European club fixtures if they want to watch their national teams play in their respective continental championships. 

The net result is that these tournaments find themselves battling for air as they are suffocated by the behemoth of European club football.
