Chrome and platinum group metals producer Tharisa has joined other major mining companies and begun transporting its bulk commodities by truck due to South Africa's ailing rail network.
The group has also tapped the Port of Maputo, moving most of its bulk commodities away from South Africa's congested ports of Durban and Richards Bay. Tharisa shipped 1.5 million tonnes of chrome material to the markets in its year ended September.
More than 80% of that reached the ports by truck, reversing the normal trend where the group had allocated 80% of its bulk commodities for transportation by railway.
