The new advocates' chambers in Tyger Valley.
The first advocates’ chambers in the northern suburbs has opened its doors in Tyger Valley, helping many an attorney spend less time on the road to Cape Town’s CBD.
As far as known, it’s only the second chambers to open for Capetonians outside of the one located close to the Western Cape High Court in the CBD.

The chambers, situated at the Tyger Waterfront, were opened by Jasper Tredoux and Albert Mooij.

Mooij, who has been an advocate for years, explains that advocates can practice in more than one location.
“All legal practitioners (both advocates and attorneys) can only practice in their respective professions if they are registered members of the Legal Practice Council in terms of the Legal Practice Act. Membership of the Cape Bar is not compulsory,” he says.

“The members of the Cape Bar can only practice in bar-approved chambers in the CBD. This does not apply to advocates who are members of the Cape Bar.”

Mooij and Tredoux are both former members of the Cape Bar, but still are still advocates of the High Court of South Africa and have rights of appearance in any court in South Africa, including the Western Cape High Court.

Less time on the road

The chambers’ location will help many attorneys spend less time in traffic or on the road.

“From the late 1980’s Capetonians witnessed the rapid and steady expansion and development of businesses further and further away from the Cape Town CBD, especially to the northern suburbs,” Mooij explains.

Attorneys wanted to be close to their clients and relocated their offices to these suburbs.
“An unintended consequence of this rapid growth was that, because advocates were still based in the Cape Town CBD, attorneys and their clients had to spend long hours in the busy Cape Town traffic to travel to the CBD and back.”

They saw the need and opportunity, he says, and hope to be of service to many attorneys.

Advocates’ Chambers Tyger Valley can be contacted Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00. The new chambers opened recently and are situated at the Ground Floor, Canal Edge 2A, Fountain Road, Tyger Waterfront, telephone 021 423 0122 – right on the doorstep of many of the attorneys who practice in Bellville, Durbanville and neighbouring areas.
