The DA-led government in the Western Cape has taken its first step towards putting the embattled Knysna municipality under administration.
Local Government MEC Anton Bredell confirmed that he had written to Knysna Mayor Aubrey Tsengwa and council Speaker Mncedisi Skosana to tell them he was considering a recommendation to Premier Alan Winde and the Western Cape Cabinet to intervene in the Knysna Municipality in terms of Section 139(1)(a) of the Constitution.
The section allows the provincial government to intervene by taking appropriate measures to ensure that the municipality fulfils its obligations. It is usually the first step before a provincial government places a municipality under administration.
