The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is hoping for a positive ruling which could see workers returning to work at the mine previously owned by the infamous Gupta family.
NUM Highveld regional chairperson Malekutu Motubatse said: “NUM is unequivocal that the termination was informed by rapaciousness. The shareholders of RBCT [Richards Bay Coal Terminal], which are Thungela, Seriti, Exxaro and Glencore, decided to maximise profit, while the marginalised and downtrodden workers at Optimum [Coal Mine] continue to suffer and are subjected to abject poverty by these conglomerates.”
