WATCH: South Africans suggest alternatives to tax hikes

Cape Town - South Africans await with great anticipation Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's National Budget Speech to be delivered on Wednesday as he's expected to announce among other things, both direct and indirect tax increases.

Fin24 asked people in Cape Town and Johannesburg to share their views on possible increases in the value added tax (VAT), sin taxes and the fuel levy, as well as the implementation of the newly proposed sugar tax.

The responses were diverse, with one South African calling for a wealth tax instead of a VAT hike as it will hit the working class and the poor the hardest, while another citizen called for a pause in tax increases  because of the mismanaging the funds.

"I don't think the government should take any more money from the citizens because they haven't proven they can handle the amount that they are collecting right now. They don't know how to use the funds properly, so they don't deserve any more."

"I think the best way is for them [the government] to cut down on wasteful expenditure first of all, but they also need to increase their tax revenue by creating more jobs and upskilling people," recommended another person.
