Education: Don't complain, get involved - chamber

Johannesburg - Now is the time for matriculants to celebrate, but also to think about the future and what role they want to play in taking South Africa forward, the AHi business chamber said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

"Our country needs innovative and energetic young people who are prepared to work hard to equip themselves with relevant skills and knowledge," said AHi CEO Christo van der Rheede.

"There is no shortcut to success. However, with the right mindset and willingness to learn it is possible to overcome adversities and to achieve success."

The AHi also calls on all local businesses and local chambers to become more involved in local education and to engage local schools regarding the latest trends in labour market requirements.

"Many deserving young people and schools are also in need of financial support and an investment of any sort by businesses could, over the longer term, provide the well trained and qualified personnel so desperately needed," he said.

The AHi, therefore, emphasises that greater and positive involvement as opposed to negative pronouncements about the education system or questioning the integrity of the matric results is much more helpful, especially during a time such as the present.

"Our young people must know that the entire nation shares in their achievements and that all of us do take collective responsibility for their future," said Van der Rheede.

The AHi also calls on communities to take greater responsibility for their schools and the quality of education that takes place in the classroom.

"Let's make 2015 a year of greater parent and business involvement and teacher support. After all, this is what drives success in education: involvement, support and accountability," he said.
