Eskom warns of banking scam

Cape Town - Fraudsters are using Eskom's name in a banking scam aimed at robbing unsuspecting consumers.

The power utility warned on Friday that there is a criminal element pretending to be Eskom and claiming that the company has changed its banking account.

The scam which has resurfaced involves an email with the title "Urgent: 14 days disconnection notice" and includes what looks like an Eskom bill bearing, together with the Eskom logo and the forged bank details, according to the statement.

Eskom emphasised that the emails are not legitimate and warned users to be alert.

If in doubt of the authenticity of communication received from Eskom, consumers can contact the Eskom Customer Call Centre on 08600 37566 for verification.

To report incidents of fraud, corruption and irregularities involving Eskom, members of the public are requested to call Eskom’s crime line on 0800 11 27 22 or email investigate@eskom.co.za to report the incident.
