1. Public Protector told to reflect on conduct in scathing judgment

The legitimacy of the Public Protector’s office and her reputation may be damaged if she takes a dismissive or procedurally unfair approach as she has done in the matter regarding the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), Judge John Murphy said. The judgment, delivered on Tuesday by Justice Cynthia Pretorius on behalf of Murphy, sets aside Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s remedial action.


2. Gigaba will engage with FNB CEO over SAA boycott

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba will engage with FNB CEO Jacques Celliers following his declaration that he will no longer fly with South African Airways (SAA). This follows a tweet by Celliers on Monday, in which he said he will no longer fly SAA because “this abuse has to come to an end”.

3. Treasury set to tighten tax noose on expat workers

There are clearly many South African tax residents who earn money abroad and are not declaring that income to the South African Revenue Service (SARS), National Treasury said on Tuesday.  In a presentation given to Parliament’s standing committee on finance, Treasury elaborated on its proposal to repeal an exemption that creates the opportunity for South Africans who work abroad to not pay tax at all.

4. Treasury seeks further delay in provident fund tax change

The proposed annuitisation of provident fund benefits, which was pushed out until March 2018, should be postponed by another year, National Treasury recommended to Parliament on Tuesday.

5. Guptas said to have found alternative after Bank of Baroda snub

The Gupta family, whose accounts are being closed down by the Bank of Baroda’s South African unit, have told the Indian lender that they’ve found another company willing to offer them banking services, according to a person familiar with the matter.
