Business tech helps abattoir grow

Cape Town - A Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, abattoir and meat wholesaler is using Enterprise Resource Planning Solutions (ERP) to streamline its business processes.

Ramburg Beef now processes about 50% more heads of cattle daily since implementing the SAP Business One Abattoir ERP system, and spend less time processing entries or making manual adjustments.

Clyde Langenberg, financial manager of Ramburg Beef, explained in a statement that the company wanted to find a solution to address the risks associated with certain business challenges.

For example, there was no integration between the payroll and general ledger. The manual capturing required was very time consuming. Furthermore, multiple units of measure were used. Incorrect pricing could hurt relationships with clients and incorrect units of measure could change the product price per line item.

The reports on production output were not live and were dependent on manual capturing. This posed a greater risk for human error, or that clients could miss particular pieces of pertinent information by having to go through extremely large reports.

The company was also unable to track at what stage a production order was, and how long it had been at a specific stage. This could affect the output of the production process.

With the help of the new ERP system, payroll and general Ledger aspects of the business were integrated and all postings to ledgers became an automated process.

To improve the units of measure and pricing, a warehouse and inventory management solution was implemented, which allowed inventory to be managed using various costing models, while maintaining the master data.

To improve reporting on the output of workstations, a completely integrated solution was implemented to provide a real-time, bird’s-eye.

A specific abattoir modular solution was implemented to address the lack of production stage tracking.

Langenberg said, looking at the cost implications of not having these processes, it quickly became clear that the business had made the right decision.
