Johannesburg - Irate MTN customers have lambasted the mobile network over bill shocks after the company warned of depleting data.
Earlier this week, MTN said that high cellphone bill costs and depleting data bundles could be blamed on the transition from a feature phone to a smartphone, roll out of 4G and social media usage.
However, Fin24 users lashed out at the network, saying that MTN was out to "rip off" its customers.
“MTN has been ripping off the public for over 20 years. You cannot ever get a successful query. Standard answer is the data is valid. Icasa is toothless and does nothing about MTN's dropped calls and over billing,” Fin24 user, John said.

“MTN are a bunch of crooks mobile data is off, loaded R50 airtime. Make a call of 30 seconds, then all of a sudden you've reached your call limit. At first I thought maybe it is my phone, until numerous people started complaining about the same problems. I do not have enough fingers or toes to count the amount of random people I know with the same issues,” user Tiphany said.
“Liars and criminals… CEO gets huge bonuses and they decide to stop data rollover - bunch of %^#$&%^$&^%$’s,” Sean said.
“MTN are ripping people off and because they know people won't make a big deal out of it, they just carry on. I lost R400 in a week, add the millions of users who lose data...well how much do you think they have made for services not rendered?” Fin24 user Stacie said.
Responding to these complaints, MTN told Fin24 that customers on the My MTN Choice were advised to set their Subscriber Usage Limit (SUL) by dialling *141*1*7852# or visit the nearest MTN store and ask for their usage limit to be set on zero.

“Once this is done, the customer’s package will not go out-of-bundle. With the SUL the customer has control on both calls and data bundle usage. Customers can also download an MTN app in order to manage and monitor your usage,” MTN told Fin24.
“Also buying bundles allows the customer to know when the cap has been reached, this is dependent. Customers on legacy price plans who want to control their spend must migrate to the My MTN Choice price-plans,” they went further to say.
MTN said that with the SUL, the customer has control on both calls and data bundle usage but the service did not work for roaming calls.
