Here are Twitter's top 10 hashtags for 2016

Johannesburg - As 2016 draws to a close, social network Twitter is choosing to celebrate highlights throughout the year with the #ThisHappened hashtag.

“What a year! From news and entertainment to sports and politics, around the world or around the block; it all happened on Twitter,” a statement from the microblog read.

The #ThisHappened hashtag is coupled with a custom Twitter 2016 emoji.

Twitter had a rough 2016 with job cuts and shares plummeting after buyouts by large suitors such as Google and Walt Disney faded.

This year the company also shut down Vine, the three-year-old app that rose to popularity for its six-second video clips, which they had acquired in 2012 before the app had even launched.

In October, shares in Twitter sank 20% to close at $19.87.

Later that month the company announced that it would slash 8% of the workforce, or about 300 people - the same percentage it did last year when co-founder Dorsey took over as chief executive officer.

On Friday, Twitter appointed Keith Coleman as the new vice president of product.

But the company is trying to look back positively on the year that was.

And here are Twitter's top Global Conversations for 2016 - as listed by the company:

8) #Trump

7) #BlackLivesMatter

6) #Brexit

5) #Oscars

4) #Euro2016
