Fintech group Blue Label Telecoms says it has seen load shedding significantly hit prepaid electricity usage for the first time ever, but the unprecedented blackouts have at least confirmed that Cell C's move away from its network infrastructure to roaming agreements was a good strategic move.
Speaking after the release of what the group described as "solid" half-year results, co-CEO Brett Levy said while the group's electricity business continues to outperform, the outages had halted "many, many years" of double-digit growth.
"The issue that is happening in electricity is something that we didn't really think was going to happen," his co-CEO, and brother, Mark Levy said. "The average consumer, historically, never had enough money to last him a whole month ... and always seemed to run out of electricity, probably a couple days a month."
