South Africa's largest private hospital network, Netcare, has said it should have been more diligent in checking economist Thabi Leoka's qualifications when it appointed her to its board two years ago.
Leoka is facing questions about whether she received a PhD in economics and economic history in 2008 as she has claimed. While Leoka maintains she was awarded the degree by the prestigious London School of Economics, the university has said it can find no evidence of it.
The 44-year-old served as an independent non-executive director of Netcare between January 2022 and March 2023.
