Nyanga police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after four people were shot and killed at Lloyd informal settlement in Nyanga on Sunday 28 April.
Provincial police spokesperson Andre Traut said the officers were summoned to the crime scene in Lloyd informal settlement in Govan Mbeki Road at around 21:40 where the bodies of three men and one female in their twenties were discovered with gunshot wounds inside a shack.
“A fifth victim was admitted to hospital, also with a gunshot wound.
The motive for the attack on the victims is yet to be determined and the suspects are still being sought by detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit,” said Traut.
However, ward 36 councillor Nceba Ntshweza said there are seven people that were killed in total during the incident. He explained that five of them died on the scene and another person in hospital. While there was another person who was shot later in Delft in the same night which was also related to the incident.
He said it is suspected that the assailants were paying revenge.
“It was reported that some of the deceased were among the people who shot and killed people in the vicinity early this year,” explained Ntshweza, stating that he is not sure what they were fighting for.
He stated that it is not the first time such an incident occurred in his ward. He said three people were shot and killed at the traffic lights at the intersection of Symphony Way, Sheffield and Govan Mbeki roads three weeks ago trying to rob the motorists.
Ntshweza cited Lloyd as one of the hotspots in his ward.
“There is a high crime rate at Lloyd. Motorists are hijacked or robbed now and then at traffic lights when there is a traffic jam. Crime is getting out of hand at Lloyd now,” said Ntshweza.
He urged people to stay alert all the time.
