Six people have lost their lives while one sustained serious injuries after three vehicles collided on the R61 road in Cofimvaba near St Marks towards Komani on March 7.
According to Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, at about 10:30 three Toyota vehicles collided.
He said that one of the vehicles had five occupants and was travelling from Komani to Mthatha while the second vehicle with two occupants from Cofimvaba was headed to Komani.
Binqose said that the two vehicles collided head-on.
“Four people died on the scene, three from one of the vehicles and the driver from the second vehicle. Two people died on arrival at the Cofimvaba Hospital,” said Binqose.
He further said that one of the passengers who had sustained serious injuries was also taken to the Cofimvaba Hospital.
Binqose said that the occupant of the third vehicle, sustained minor bruises and did not require any hospitalisation.
“The main cause of the crash is still unknown at this stage,” said Binqose.
“A case of culpable homicide had been opened at Bridge Camp SAPS for further investigations.”
