The Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, has urged motorists, especially truck drivers and cash-in-transit vehicles to avoid the road linking Mthatha to Port St Johns and Lusikisiki.
Binqose said protestors had used trucks to block the T-junction on the bridge crossing Mzimvubu, the only exit and entrance to Port St Johns.
“Law enforcement is on the ground trying to defuse the situation,” said Binqose.

This follows a decision that was taken by members of the Sajonisi Woods Forum last year that they wanted the Mayor of Port St Johns Local Municipality, Councilor Nomvuzo Mlombile-Cingo and Portfolio Head of Engineering and Planning Services Councilor Gcina Tshotho to be removed from the municipality.
Public Relations Officer for Sajonisi Woods Forum, Andile Mzungule, said they had told the police officers that the road should be opened.
"Still, it seems as if residents are also participating in this. We have spoken with the police officers as we are waiting for someone from the ANC office to brief us about their steps regarding our demand. When we woke up this morning, we found that some trees were used to close the road; we do not know who did that,” said Mzungule.
He said they were unsure about who would come and brief them.
