Two days before Cheryl-Ann Kannemeyer (61) was murdered, she radiated peace and calm and served a delicious Christmas dinner to her family and guests.
Kannemeyer, a real estate agent from Gqeberha, was buried on Friday after being stabbed to death on December 27 in the driveway of her Parkside home, in the northern suburbs.
A friend, Rochelle Wessels, at her North End Father’s House funeral service, reminisced on how beautiful Kannemeyer was, and how she enjoyed the baked potatoes that her friend prepared on Christmas Day.
Her children, Jodi, Dexter and Blake Kannemeyer, cannot imagine life without their mother, whose love for her family, neighbours and God was unwavering.
“It hurts me to think about all the great moments in my life that are yet to come, and to know that you will not be by my side,” said an emotional Jodi at her mother’s service.
“My dearest mother,” said Dexter, her eldest child, before pausing for a moment due to emotion. “Thank you for lighting my way when I was lost in the dark and for being my anchor in the stormy sea of life."
Kannemeyer was cremated privately.
She was found with multiple stab wounds in the front passenger seat of a Honda Jazz in her driveway.
Her husband, Colin (Junior) Kannemeyer (57), appeared in the magistrate’s court in Gqeberha last Tuesday on charges of murder.
This former nightclub owner was found stretched out on the ground behind the car, with several stab wounds to his upper body, on December 27. He was apparently taken to Livingstone Hospital in a heavily intoxicated state, and arrested the following day on a charge of murder.
Dexter told Netwerk24 earlier that his mother was planning to divorce his father. They were married for more than 30 years.
Colin indicated that he was not going to apply for bail. He is due to appear in the magistrate’s court again on February 20.
While Kannemeyer’s funeral service was underway in North End, Reeva Steenkamp’s family gathered at Pollok Beach.
Here Jenna Beckett, who received the legal scholarship from the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation in 2019, spoke about gender violence.
“Sexual violence in our country is a big problem. There are a lot of women who don’t know that what they’re experiencing is wrong or harmful,” said Beckett. Oscar Pistorius was released on parole last Friday, after the murder of Steenkamp in 2013.
