The failure of a multimillion-rand project to enhance security in the City of Johannesburg (COJ) compromised the safety of residents, rendering almost a quarter of the City's security camera network dysfunctional while more than R67 million allegedly irregularly left City coffers.
According to documents seen by News24, while the security project depended on CCTV, only 109 cameras out of 492 were online in 2020. The Department of Public Safety paid millions to Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC) – mandated to maintain the City's infrastructure – to maintain the cameras, but goods were never received.
News24 understands that two years later, only a handful of cameras are operational.
