The Cape Town Cycle Tour takes place in the Mother City on Sunday.

In addition to the traditional 109km race circling the Cape Peninsula, the shorter 42km route will also be available for the second time.

There are more than 30 spots along the route where members of the public can watch and cheer on the cyclists. These include Mostert's Mill off Rhodes Avenue (M3), Edinburgh Drive (M3 Wynberg Park), Ladies Mile, Steenberg Road, Bay Road in Muizenberg, Jubilee Square in Simon's Town, Noordhoek Farm Village, Hout Bay CBD, Camp's Bay Main Road, and the Sea Point Promenade.

Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said: "The Cape Town Cycle Tour has been a staple of our city's event calendar for five decades and is revered by cyclists across the globe."

He added that the event not only attracted thousands of people to the city, but also provided a major annual boost for the economy.

"The cyclists have spent the better part of the year preparing to take on this challenge, and having as many people cheering them on from the sidelines as they make their way across the Peninsula would serve as great motivation," Smith said.

A number of temporary road closures will be implemented on both routes on Saturday and Sunday, including some in the City Bowl, around the DHL Stadium, and in the Southern Suburbs.

Among the road closures are:
  • Helen Suzman Boulevard from Beach Road to Traffic Circle will be closed from 14:00 on Saturday until 21:00 on Sunday.
  • Chapman's Peak Drive will be closed from 18:00 on Saturday until 18:00 on Sunday.
  • Nelson Mandela Boulevard, incoming from Strand Street, will be closed from 19:00 on Saturday until 16:00 on Sunday.
  • M3 inbound, Hospital Bend Interchange and Nelson Mandela Boulevard will be closed on Sunday from 10:00 – 15:00
  • Victoria Rd along Camps Bay, North and South bound will be closed from 07:00 until 18:00 on Sunday.
  • M4 Main Rd through Tokai, Lakeside, False Bay to Cape Point and Scarborough will be closed on Sunday between 05:45 until 14:00.

Several MyCiTi bus routes will also be affected on Saturday and Sunday. Information on road closures and affected bus routes is available on the City of Cape Town's website.
