An eThekwini metro police department officer was killed in a shooting in the vicinity of the Hans Dettman off-ramp on the M7 toward Durban on Thursday morning.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said it was discovered that the officer had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
"Unfortunately, there was nothing more paramedics could do for the man, and he was declared deceased," he added.
Jamieson said the details of what led up to the shooting were unknown but that police were on the scene to investigate.

eThekwini metro police department spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu was unable to give further details.
"We cannot not say much until we have informed the family," he said.
