KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating the killing of two bodyguards inside the Umhlathuze Local Municipality building on Thursday.

"Police have opened a murder case following a shooting incident at the Umhlathuze municipal offices in Richards Bay on Thursday morning," said police spokesperson Colonel Richard Netshiunda on Saturday.

"Information at the police's disposal at this stage indicates that an off-duty bodyguard shot and fatally wounded another bodyguard. The suspect was then shot and fatally wounded by a bodyguard colleague of the first victim. Investigations will be instituted to establish what could have been the motive for the shooting," he said.
