England and India drew the first Test at Trent Bridge after rain meant no play was possible on the last day on Sunday.

The match, which had already seen more than 100 overs lost to bad weather, was intriguingly poised with India 52-1 in their second innings, needing a further 157 runs to reach a victory target of 209.

But rain prevented play resuming as scheduled at 11:00 and after further downpours the umpires abandoned the match as a draw at 15:49, only for the sun to briefly burst through the overcast skies above Trent Bridge.

England had won the toss, but were bowled out for 183 on the back of Joe Root's 64. India responded with a total of 278 on the back of half-centuries from KL Rahul (84) and Ravindra Jadeja (56) while Ollie Robinson (5/85) collected his first test five-wicket haul

England's 303 looked imposing, but they batted spasmodically against accurate bowling by the visitors. Root's 109, his 21st Test ton, anchored an innings that had starts from Sam Curran (32), Jonny Bairstow (30), Dom Sibley (28) and Dan Lawrence (25)

Jasprit Bumrah (5/64) was always on hand to check England's progress, while also collecting Root's scalp.

The second Test in this five-match series is scheduled to start at Lord's on Thursday
