NUM says meeting with Ramaphosa 'productive', but march against Eskom unbundling will go ahead

The National Union of Mineworkers says it will go ahead with a planned march to the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House this month to protest the unbundling of Eskom.

This comes after it held a three-hour meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan and Energy Minister Jeff Radebe on Monday.

The union said it will consult with its members at the power utility on the contents of the meeting and discuss a way forward. It did not immediately say whether the meeting would change its plans to institute a "total shutdown" set to begin on May 3, leading up to the general elections on May 8.

The union fears that the unbundling of Eskom, announced by Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address in February, will result in job losses.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, it said that the meeting with the president was "productive and brought some elements of hope".

"Going forward, there will be an open dialogue on issues affecting workers, and that will accommodate every stakeholder," it said.

"Most importantly, the NUM is relieved after being assured by the President that no jobs will be lost in the process of unbundling, and that the power utility will remain 100% state-owned.

"The President also assured the NUM that going forward, stakeholders will be taken along or consulted when major decisions are taken," it said.
