From decoding SA billionaire Johann Rupert's much-talked about interview to axed SARS Commissioner Tom Moyane challenging Judge Hans Fabricius' take on his "abominable" conduct, catch up on this week's top read stories.
1. Decoding Johann Rupert: Given Mkhari weighs in
SA multi-billionaire Johann Rupert's remarks in a discussion at a PowerFM event drew responses from South Africans which show that the country still has "deep racial and class" divisions, says host Given Mkhari.
"If anything, the responses to the Rupert conversation illustrated our country's enduring, deep racial and class divisions and their accompanying raw emotions," said Mkhari.
2. Court dismisses Moyane's bid to overturn his dismissal
In handing down judgment, Judge Hans Fabricius said the matter was not urgent. He also dismissed Moyane's bid to block the Nugent Commission's final report.
"(Moyane) has no legal interest in the contents of the report," he said.
Moyane had mounted a legal battle challenging the powers of the Commission of Inquiry, which was tasked with investigating administrative governance at the SA Revenue Service (SARS).
3.Moyane heading back to ConCourt, challenges judge's 'abominable' remarks
Axed SARS commissioner Tom Moyane will again turn to the Constitutional Court and appeal the North Gauteng High Court’s dismissal of his application to overturn his sacking.
But that's not all.
His lawyer Eric Mabuza told Fin24 on Wednesday the matter had gone "way beyond" requesting leave to appeal from Judge Hans Fabricius, who delivered the scathing ruling or the Supreme Court of Appeal.
4. Moyane’s legal bills pile up as he forges ahead with 'unnecessary' court battles
Axed South African Revenue Services (SARS) Commissioner Tom Moyane faces a growing legal bill as he heads to the Constitutional Court again, this time to appeal a scathing North Gauteng High Court ruling which upheld his dismissal.
Natasha Moni, a director at Moni Inc and a labour law expert, said a punitive costs order allowed the other parties in the case to set their legal fees higher than the court tariffs allowed. The court regulations are far below what normal attorney fees are.
"A punitive costs order is really just punishing you because you should not have gone knocking on that door," Moni told Fin24.
5. Acting SARS boss Mark Kingon's term extended for the third time
Finance minister Tito Mboweni has extended acting South African Revenue Services commissioner’s term for another 90 days as pressure mounts on President Cyril Ramaphosa to make a permanent appointment.
This is the third time Kingon’s acting appointment has been extended. He replaced Tom Moyane in March when he was suspended as commissioner.
Moyane has mounted a legal challenge to regain his job and block a successor from being appointed.
