I received my share of usual Happy "Africa Day" greetings, on Monday, and responded with the usual, "You too" accompanied by a happy meme. I shared one of the most colourful messages I received on my social media page, too, to be in the groove.

It is never a good thing to appear to be the only one asking the wrong questions or raising the unhappy issues when everyone is busy having a party. And party well we do, in Africa – and I mean Africa in the broader sense of the word – whether one is physically here or elsewhere in the vast diaspora.

Apart from the havoc brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 Africa Day celebration went ahead undeterred: music, dance, and colourful processions with African national flags held high and everyone in a joyful mood, dressed in their best traditional regalia for photo opportunities.
