The ANC’s Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) has announced that former president Jacob Zuma reiterated during a meeting with them on Thursday his stance that he would not go to the Zondo commission.
Hopes were raised that Zuma might change his mind about going to the commission after his meeting with EFF leader Julius Malema last week. But on Thursday night, MKMVA issued a statement saying they had concluded a successful seven-hour meeting with Zuma.
“President Zuma reiterated that he would not go to the Zondo commission, and the MKMVA NEC [national executive committee] delegation pledged our full support for this courageous decision. We wholeheartedly agree with Msholozi's reasons, as contained in his letter/statement of February 1.
”The MKMVA also vowed to protect him from being arrested as a result of violating the Zondo summons.
“President Zuma also further expanded to the MKMVA NEC delegation about his reasons, which once again confirmed to us that this is a well-considered decision fully deserving our support. The #MKMVA NEC delegation confirmed that we are wholeheartedly with Nxamalala, that we oppose any attempt to arrest him and that we will protect our patron in chief.”
Zuma said last month that he would no longer cooperate with the commission even after the Constitutional Court ruled that he had to comply with the summons and give testimony. He said he was not afraid of being arrested or jailed.
The commission condemned Zuma’s vow of defiance as “completely unacceptable” in a constitutional democracy like South Africa.
