Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo conducted a coaching workshop in Soweto this week in a bid to address what he deemed to be wrong coaching tactics at the grassroots level.

During the workshop at Mampuru Hall in Dube, Soweto, Khumalo, who has held coaching stints at PSL club level and national youth teams, imparted his knowledge to young and unlicensed coaches.

The emphasis was on the latest tactical and technical approach to the game of football.

Some of the coaches who attended the workshop will be guiding their teams in Khumalo’s tournament, the Gauteng Ultimate Champs, on Sunday, 17 March.

The event at Matador Ground in Dube, Soweto, Khumalo's hometown, will feature soccer and netball competitions.

Khumalo shared what came out of the workshop:

This was part of the preparation for unlicensed coaches to have an idea of what to expect at Safa D licence training. I gave coaches who can’t afford to pay for coaching courses an opportunity and exposure to the basics of coaching.

The Bafana Bafana legend emphasised that this would reduce the late development of young talent in townships, such as Soweto.

We want coaches to appreciate their role in building young talent confidence in sports and society. As a coach, you need to profile your players and having archives helps you grow. You need to improvise as a coach and take your job seriously because, in football, there are no shortcuts.

Khumalo wishes the hopefuls to follow in the footsteps of other kasi coaches who are doing well in the PSL, like Rulani Mokwena, who is the head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mokwena, who guided his kasi club, Black Poison FC to multiple kasi tournament titles, also coached Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

Aspirant coach Motlatsi Kebeti, who is in charge of Doornkop-based side Black Diamond Under-11 and Under-13 teams, shared what he learnt from Khumalo’s workshop, including how to develop a structure of a team:

Doctor has taught us how to present yourself as a coach and how you talk to your players. Whatever we teach them, they will also implement it in their lives.
