As South Africa gears up to mark the 30th anniversary of our liberation and to hold the country’s seventh democratic elections, many of us feel the way Christians must have felt more than 2 000 years ago – on Good Friday – in despair and devoid of hope for the future.

And there are plenty of reasons to feel pessimistic. Over the past six weeks, I have been canvassing the views of leaders in business, education, the media, NGOs, the faith community, sports, arts and entertainment industry.
