Billionaire SA businessman Dick Enthoven is remembered as a "bohemian" who had an imaginative approach to entrepreneurship and turned his big dreams into reality.
Enthoven, who passed away on 2 December at the age of 85 after a long battle with cancer, played a key role in building businesses like Nando's, Hollard Insurance, Auto & General, and Direct Axis. He also helped develop the Spier Wine Estate near Stellenbosch into an iconic wine tourism destination.
His father, Robert, was a Dutch immigrant who started an insurance brokerage business in the late 1950s. Under Dick Enthoven and his brother Patrick, the company eventually evolved into Hollard, SA's largest privately-owned insurer, with businesses across the globe. In 2015, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimated Enthoven's fortune at $1.1 billion.
