Next week’s national budget will show that government expenditure is running way above target and that revenue is running behind, according to Isaac Matshego, a senior economist at Nedbank.
"It’s not looking pretty on the revenue side," Matshego said during a webinar on Tuesday. "We’re well behind what was expected."
There has been weak performance from tax on corporate profit, what with mining companies’ sales dropping on lower commodity prices and many SA companies experiencing higher operational costs because of load shedding and investing in renewable sources of energy, he said.
