Unused mobile data won’t expire for at least six months under new proposed laws – but MTN has objected, saying that the regulation would favour consumers.

On Thursday, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) received MTN’s response to the draft amendments to the End-User and Subscriber Service Charter Regulations of 2016.

The amendments propose that mobile operators do not allow prepaid and postpaid airtime, data and voice services to expire before six months, except those which are part of promotional packages.
