A year before the SA Reserve Bank (SARB) swooped to attach assets linked to former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste, the bank had already started to seize property and cars belonging to some of his former colleagues, as well as his one-time-rumoured romantic partner.
While the raids on Jooste immediately caused a media sensation, the bank appears to have been attaching assets of others with little fanfare.
Now, a former employee in Steinhoff's African operations, who had his assets attached almost exactly a year before the bank moved against Jooste, has taken the SARB to court to stop his house in the exclusive Val de Vie Estate from being attached.
