A childhood friend of Markus Jooste has called on South Africans to show kindness and consideration to the late Steinhoff CEO's family after his sudden death by suicide.
"We all have a role to play in this tragedy, and that is to be kind to those who are suffering and respect the departed as they are not here to defend themselves," said longtime friend Gary Harlow.
Jooste died on Thursday when he shot himself on the rocks beneath the coastal path in Kwaaiwater, Hermanus, where he lived. He was transported to hospital, where he later died. He was 63.
