South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REI4P) promotes the development of communities where projects are based, a trait that has been described as "globally unique" by some researchers.
The programme follows a competitive tender process, where Independent Power Producers (IPP) can submit bids for renewable energy projects which include wind and solar PV. Four bidding rounds or bid windows were completed between 2011 and 2015. Given the competitiveness of the process, prices of generating solar PV and wind energy have become cheaper over the years and even rival that of coal-fired power generation.
The request for proposal for the long-awaited fifth bid window is yet to be released.
