South Africans will be pleased to see the back of 2023, which brought painful food price hikes.

Potato prices rocketed by almost 65% in the year to November, while egg prices climbed 40%.

The latter was fuelled by the worst bird flu outbreak in SA's history, with millions of chickens slaughtered in response. Poultry meat prices are expected to continue rising amid shortages.
