The government has been unable to award bids to several green power projects in the latest round of its renewable energy procurement programme owing to grid constraints.
The Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) is now in its sixth bid window, for which six preferred bidders were announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) on Thursday.
While several other qualifying bids have been identified, they could not be awarded as these projects are located in the Western and Eastern Cape in areas where there is now no grid capacity available to connect them.
