Trade union Solidarity has lost its case to halt government's preparations for the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
In a judgment handed down by the Pretoria High Court this week, Judge David Unterhalter said it is lawful for government to make various appointments and policies in preparation for implementing the national healthcare system via the NHI fund.
This includes appointing 44 officials to manage the NHI fund, establishing an NHI branch within the Department of Health, establishing five chief directorates in branch, and to allow for Treasury to shift funds for the employees budget for the NHI.
