While a whopping 80% of businesses say they won't deliver to townships, informal settlements or rural areas and have no plans to do so, township entrepreneurs have spotted the gap - and are cashing in.
The latest Rogerwilco Township Survey shows a growing uptake of homegrown delivery services and digital payments, with 12.6% of residents saying they have used Ekasi Delivery, 5.6% saying they have used Delivery Ka Speed, while others have used Order Kasi, Swypa, and Yebo Fresh.
Delivery Ka Speed - a dedicated online township delivery service platform with just under 500 000 users in Gauteng, North West, and Limpopo – has seen a staggering 50% growth year-on-year, with the company delivering everything from food to cell phones.
