The government, like the Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks, has come up with its own version of the "bomb squad" when it comes to fixing Eskom’s critical power stations and feeding an extra 8 000 megawatts into the grid, according to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

Six of Eskom’s 18 power stations were chosen during the year as focus areas so that those with the most potential to make a difference to the country’s ongoing battle to meet the demand for electricity were given as much support as could be mustered. The six were Majuba, Kendal, Matla, Tutuka, Kusile and Duvha.

At Tutuka, one of the most experienced general managers was appointed to oversee that effort, together with his recovery team. In rugby terms, "this is what you call the bomb squad", Ramokgopa said in a briefing on Thursday about SA’s Energy Action Plan. The Springbok bomb squad is a group of six large replacement players in the front row.
