This live-action reimagining of the beloved animated series follows Aang, the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation.

It must have been a daunting prospect for the creators of the new Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation to take on the series. The original show is often hailed as one of the best pieces of animation of all time and a singular achievement in media targeted at younger audiences. Any type of new project based on the series will be intensely scrutinised.

The legacy of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender has been sustained by the comics and the sequel series Legend of Korra. The generation that watched and loved the original series has matured and probably has its own Netflix accounts. This generation also witnessed M. Night Shyamalan's disastrous first attempt at a live-action adaptation and still bears the scars.
