Motorists can now renew their vehicle licences via Shoprite or Checkers at a discounted cost.
  • More than one million South African vehicle licences expired in September this year.
  • Many have not yet been renewed, and the figure increased in October.
  • Shoprite and Checkers are offering motorists a reduced cost to renew their vehicle licences online.

The Bokke are home, and so is the Webb Ellis Cup, but vehicle licences still need to be renewed - especially if they have already expired. Shoprite and Checkers have come to South Africa's motorists' aid by offering a reduced cost for car licence renewals.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation warned motorists that more than one million car licences would expire at the end of September. The tally increased in October.

Shoprite and Checkers are offering a reduced costs for their online vehicle renewal service for only R185 - R40 off its usual admin fee of R225.

In 2022, Pick n Pay had an online car licence renewal service, which was quite costly. At the time, the shopping retailer said on its website: "Your vehicle licence disc renewal payment will include the following, which is automatically added to your payment amount: the amount for the licence renewal, a licence disc renewal admin fee of R345 (including VAT), and a delivery fee of R99 (including VAT)."

When you sell your vehicle, make sure the yellow change of ownership form is filled in and submitted. Not doing so can result in hefty vehicle licence penalty fees.

The new discounted fee of only R185 is the lowest offered by a South African retailer. Motorists can renew their vehicle licences online and pay either online via Computicket or in-person at the Money Market counter in any of the 1 350 Shoprite, Checkers and Usave stores nationwide.

However, this offer is for a limited time only and is available from 1 November 2023 to 31 January 2024 in response to the significant number of expired car licences in September and October.

Jean Olivier, the general manager of financial services at the Shoprite Group, said: "With soaring living costs, times are tough for consumers. We hope to provide some relief by reducing the cost of car licence renewals and providing a hassle-free process that can be completed in just a few easy steps."

How does it work?

You will need all the correct documents to complete the effortless process in less than three minutes – a current car licence disc, a barcoded ID book or smartcard ID, and proof of residence:

  • Step 1: Capture your information online
  • Step 2: Pay online via Computicket or in-store
  • Step 3: Courier delivery within 5-10 business days

What does it cost?

The fixed renewal fees are:

  • Admin fee: R110.25
  • Delivery fee: R74.75
  • Total fee: R185

The licence fee and possible penalties are variable, and a quote will be provided once the renewal process has commenced.  Vehicle licences can also be paid for at the Money Market counters in OK Furniture, House & Home and selected OK Foods franchise outlets.

However, please note that this is not the total fee of your car licence renewal - the R185 is only for the online service Shoprite and Checkers stores are offering. If you have penalties on your car licence renewal, these will still be included in your total cost.

The service is great for motorists who are pressed for time and can't go and wait in a queue.

However, it is also still relatively quick and easy to renew your vehicle licence in person. Most centres are open on Saturdays, and if you are early enough, you can be in and out with your new licence disc in less than five minutes.
