A Spanish judge in the town of Vélez-Málaga in Andalusia has compensated a divorced woman with an amount equal to R3 980 000 for her work during her 25-year marriage.
The amount was calculated by Judge Laura Ruiz Alaminos and was determined based on the minimum wage of the work carried out throughout their quarter-century-long marriage, local outlet Nius Diario reports.

According to the ruling, the 48-year-old woman, Ivana Moral, performed all the household chores "exclusively" while also contributing "punctually" to the family business, where she did the cleaning.
The separated couple share two daughters, aged 14 and 20, and the marriage was governed by a separation of property regime, which specified that whatever each party earned was theirs alone.

The lawsuit urged the recognition of such compensation since the woman "was deprived of any possible career due to her exclusive dedication to the home and family". In contrast, the man, "throughout the years of marriage, accumulated and exponentially increased his assets".
It is reported that when the couple's eldest daughter turned 16, Ivana's ex refused to pay for her to continue studying. She, therefore, started working to pay for her own studies.
Ivana eventually requested a divorce in 2020 and was initially awarded half of their house but nothing more.
