When I, a 90s baby, was younger, Converse sneakers only came in one style. They soon expanded colourways, but my memory primarily remembers that you could only get the low version in black or white.
By the time I got to high school, Converse took their design a few steps further and introduced the knee-length boot with laces all the way to the top. Now, in 2024, the brand is serving up 2010s nostalgia with a high-heeled variation of their new designs.
Conceptualised by female designers and creatives, the new heeled sneakers are part of the elevated De Luxe collection in their Edge of Style campaign.
The two new elevated styles will be available in time for the autumn season in South Africa, and according to the brand, they "go beyond the expectations of the Chuck, mixing classic with luxe".
Joining the recently introduced, and immediate fan favourite, the Chuck 70 De Luxe Heel, is the Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge – which offers up to four inches of elevation – and the Chuck 70 De Luxe Squared.

"Both styles transform the brand’s iconic rounded rubber toe cap into one with angular, squared proportions for an entirely new dimension and expression while evoking Chuck Taylor's notable DNA up top – featuring stitch detailing, octangular Converse patch and classic colourways synonymous with the brand."

In fact, Marant is one of the above-mentioned female creatives tapped to work with the brand for this release.
"The new De Luxe collection launches alongside a series of global high heat collabs with female creative collaborators, including Martine Ali, Feng Chen Wang and Isabel Marant. Each collaborator is known for charting new paths and redefining the status quo, and Converse has offered the iconic Chuck Taylor silhouette as inspiration and a catalyst for creativity to define the future of fashion," said Converse in a statement.
In another nod to nostalgia, the Chuck 70 De Luxe Squared and the Converse De Luxe Squared with Swarovski crystals complete the De Luxe silhouettes and will debut globally on 1 February 2024.
Different versions of these designs will be available locally online and in stores at Sandton City, Menlyn Park and Mall of Africa. Some designs will be exclusive to certain locations.
