City of Cape Town boosts Lwandle sports with massive upgrade to local sports ground

Lwandle Sports Ground is set for a massive upgrade after many years of it being vandalised.

Last week, the City of Cape Town announced plans to revamp the facility. Work is expected to start today ( 22 February).

The upgrade will include fencing and fixing surfaces for different sporting codes. These include a netball field, soccer pitch, gymnastics and athletics.

Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso said R250 000 has been allocated towards the project. Diniso said the City is finalising the selection of the contractor. He praised the City for taking the initiative to revamp the stadium.

“It’s been like this for years. We are grateful for what the City is doing. Our people are passionate about sports in general,” he said, adding that they would want the work to be completed before the Easter holidays for their annual Easter contest.

Diniso said they want to revive the sport to keep the children away from the street. He said fencing would protect the facility against criminals. “The criminals vandalised almost everything here. They vandalised toilets, showers, changing rooms and cut poles that fenced the five-aside pitch. The whole stadium, including the rugby field, is in tatters. The people that suffer the most are the children,” said Diniso.

“The community is depending on this ground. Only soccer and netball are still playing there. Other sporting codes have faded.”

According to Diniso, security guards would keep an eye 24/7 once all the work has been completed.
