The Jeffreys Bay Bowling Club’s Business League tells a story of endearment and community, for as far back as 2011 attempts were made to establish a successful business league at the club, to encourage community and closer ties amongst establishments in the area.

Despite facing challenges such as the absence of floodlights, which restricted gameplay to early evening hours, the league commenced and persisted for two years during the summer season.

In 2017, with the then new installation of floodlights on the A and B greens, the business league experienced a resurgence of interest. The league saw participation from 24 businesses, with leagues being held twice yearly from February to March, and again from September to October. To support new entrants to the sport, club members offered guidance and assistance. For example, if a team that consisted of four players was short of a player, a “novice” player from the club was allowed to stand in.

The popularity of the business league soared rapidly, leading to a current waiting list of eager businesses waiting to participate. Notably, four businesses have been steadfast participants in all 13 leagues, BuildIt, Moore, Summertree Civils, and SuperSpar. Additionally, three businesses have partaken in 12 leagues, one in eleven, and three others in 10.

The ongoing 13th league, which commenced on February 1, boasts a record-breaking 28 participating teams. With the league now well-established, no team managers or green masters are needed anymore. New teams are encouraged to come and practise before the league begins, where they receive coaching on rules and techniques from the club’s experienced coaches.

“The lawn bowling bug bites immediately, and none of the teams want to withdraw anymore. On the contrary, they can’t wait for the next league, which will start in September, to sign up,” remarks Hannie Ridder, secretary of the Jeffreys Bay Bowling Club, and Business League manager.

Significant strides have been made to enhance the club’s facilities, thanks to the revenue generated by the business league. Both permanent club members and league participants benefit from these improvements. Club members generously contribute their time and expertise, assisting with administrative tasks, technical issues during power outages, bar service, and providing equipment.

“It is indeed a privilege to be part of such an excellent club, where members stand together and help each other to the best of their ability,” said Ridder, expressing gratitude for the sense of unity prevailing within the club.
