The Eastern Cape Department of Health has bestowed service excellence awards on employees who set themselves apart by going the extra mile in the execution of their duties during the 2022/2023 financial year.

The awards ceremony was hosted at Mthatha’s Savoy Hotel on January 24, with Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth delivering a keynote address during the glittering ceremony.

The accolades, dubbed Batho Pele Service Excellence Awards (BPSEA), are aimed at entrenching professionalism whilst also acknowledging and encouraging health officials that have performed excellently and who had gone beyond the call of duty.

“I am happy that we are here tonight to celebrate and reward excellence. It is well and good that workers are recognised at facility and district levels, but being recognised by the province is extra-special. I had been asking that these awards should be revived, and I am glad that that has now happened,” said Meth during her keynote address.

“Those who were not nominated should not be demotivated, but use the fact that they did not make the final list of nominees as a motivating factor to do better. Through these awards we are hoping that more employees will be extra-motivated as they discharge their duties,” Meth added.

Awardees on the night included academic institutions, best-performing healthcare facilities, healthcare professionals, and administrative staff down to general workers.

Meth also used her keynote speech to pay tribute to the 351 healthcare workers and 17 000 citizens of the Eastern Cape who died due to the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020. She also credited collaboration for the successful rollout of the vaccination campaign in the province.

“Traditional health practitioners, traditional leaders, the religious fraternity, NGOs, businesses, and institutions of higher learning have all played an important role in the delivery of services. We acknowledge the crucial role played by all our partners. We have agreed with the head of department, Dr Rolene Wagner, that we will have a special session with our partners to show our appreciation. We do not take your unwavering support lightly,” Meth concluded.
