Griquas player suspended amid allegations of liquor store altercation

A 24-year-old Provincial rugby player for Griqualand West Rugby Union, will be appearing in the Kariega Magistrates Court today, May 2. He is accused of helping himself to alcohol in a bottle store in Kariega. Where allegedly he started throwing bottles of alcohol on the floor and, a customer was allegedly stabbed with a knife.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said is alleged that on Monday, April 29 at approximately 16:30, the 24-year-old suspect was at a liquor store on Gavin Drive in Kariega when he became violent and aggressive.

"It is further alleged that he helped himself to alcohol and drank it in the bottle store.

"According to witnesses, he also started throwing bottles of liquor on the floor," said Naidu.

She added that one customer was allegedly stabbed with a knife and was taken to hospital for treatment.

"He has since been treated and discharged."

Police arrested the suspect and detained him on charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, resisting arrest and public indecency.

In a statement, the CEO of Griqualand West Rugby Union, Arni van Rooyen, said that their player has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities pending further investigation and legal proceedings.

"We extend our sincerest apologies to anyone affected by this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time," said van Rooyen.

"As an organization, we remain committed to promoting a culture of respect, responsibility and accountability among our players and staff," van Rooyen expressed.
