The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has sentenced the ringleader of a tax fraud syndicate that defrauded the SA Revenue Services (SARS) to an effective 65 years imprisonment.
On Friday, Acting Judge Sam Makamu sentenced the members of the syndicate, who were convicted in December on multiple counts of corruption, forgery and money laundering.
News24 reported that the group had attempted to claim almost R1 billion in fraudulent VAT refunds from SARS, and succeeded with a claim of about R100 million between 2009 and 2015
