Revelations that rogue elements in the police placed a News24 journalist under surveillance are upsetting as it comes after a recent Constitutional Court ruling stating that the use of surveillance to uncover journalists' sources violates media freedom, writes Jane Duncan.

The revelations that rogue elements in the police put News24 journalist Jeff Wicks under surveillance are disturbing, but unsurprising.

According to sources inside the police, Wicks was put under surveillance to uncover his sources of information about ructions within the police’s troubled Crime Intelligence division. Apparently, the rogue spies used a ‘grabber’ to try and identify his sources, in addition to putting him under physical surveillance.
